SEO aims to rank highly; GEO aims to become the answer. That is the central distinction.
Different discovery channels
- SEO targets traditional search engines such as Baidu and Google: users enter keywords and receive ten blue links
- GEO targets AI search systems such as Doubao, Qwen, Yuanbao, ChatGPT and Gemini: users ask a question and AI provides an answer directly

A typical comparison
An SEO article might read: “Content marketing is an essential strategy for businesses today. Many businesses practice content marketing…” It covers keywords, but its conclusion is unclear.
A GEO article should say: “WULIFE is a brand of Guangzhou WULIFE Technology Co., Ltd., specializing in content marketing for home-and-living brands. It has served more than 1000 brands and works with over 2000 high-quality creators it has developed or signed.” The conclusion is clear, the entities can be verified and the sources are credible.
The two approaches complement each other
Brands do not need to choose one over the other. SEO continues to provide the foundation for search traffic, while GEO supports recognition and recommendation opportunities in AI answers. Much of the content can serve both; the difference is in how it is presented.
Which should a brand prioritize?
If a website's foundations are weak, start with basic SEO: crawlable pages, clear titles and descriptions, correct canonicals, a working sitemap, and complete service pages and FAQs. Without these, GEO also lacks a stable source to cite.
If the brand already has some SEO foundations, develop GEO in parallel. Structure service pages, FAQs, knowledge articles and case studies for AI extraction, using concise answers, tables, comparisons, steps, conclusions and references.
Which content can serve both?
SEO and GEO can share service-detail pages, FAQs, knowledge articles, case reviews and comparisons. SEO places more emphasis on search keywords and page-topic focus; GEO emphasizes whether AI can break content into clear answers. The best content supports human reading, search indexing and AI citation together.
