Recommended GEO papers, industry reports and expert resources
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is still an emerging field of uneven quality, with rigorous academic work alongside a great many marketing-led how-to guides. The recommendations below are grouped by credibility and type so you can choose what suits your needs.
1. Foundational academic papers: essential reading
1. GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal, Murahari et al., Princeton/Georgia Tech, KDD 2024) arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735. This foundational paper formally defines generative engines as a new paradigm: answering user queries by synthesizing several sources and summarizing them with large language models. The authors build GEO-bench and show that GEO methods can improve visibility in generative-engine responses by up to 40%, with effectiveness varying by domain. Tested strategies include authoritative tone, statistics, keyword stuffing, source citations, quotations, simpler language, greater fluency, distinctive vocabulary and technical terms. Statistics and quotations perform most consistently across metrics; the best methods improve Position-Adjusted Word Count by 22% and Subjective Impression by 37% over the baseline.
2. E-GEO: A Testbed for Generative Engine Optimization in E-Commerce (2025) arxiv.org/abs/2511.20867. This GEO study focuses on e-commerce, with more than 7000 real, multi-sentence consumer product queries. It presents the first large-scale empirical study of 15 common rewriting strategies and identifies a general GEO strategy pattern that works consistently across domains. It is a useful reference for e-commerce and product-content teams.
3. Manipulating Large Language Models to Increase Product Visibility (Kumar & Lakkaraju, 2024, arxiv 2404.07981). This paper studies how product mentions in LLM outputs can be manipulated through adversarial approaches, providing a complementary perspective on GEO's black-box dynamics.
4. Evaluating Verifiability in Generative Search Engines (Liu et al., Stanford, 2023, arxiv 2304.09848). This study examines the verifiability of generative-search answers and the accuracy of their citations, providing a theoretical foundation for why citation quality matters.
2. Recent industry research and data reports (2025–2026)
- Ahrefs' AI Overviews click-through-rate research: the data shows that when an AI Overview appears, the top organic result's click-through rate falls from 1.41% to 0.64%, a decline of about 54%. Informational queries lose around 34.5% of clicks, while transactional queries lose less than 10%. These figures can help prioritize GEO investment.
- “How AI Engines Cite the Web: The Six 2026 Studies” (everything-pr.com): a useful synthesis of six academic studies published between April 2025 and January 2026. It covers 1516 ranking queries, 58,000 statement–source pairs, 366,000 real citations across three major platforms, 186,000 news articles and 1127 URLs tracked over time. It provides an overview of the academic evidence on how AI cites the web.
- iPullRank (Mike King) research and content: Mike King is recognized in the industry as a leading technical voice and has received Search Engine Land's “AI Search Marketer of the Year” award. His Relevance Engineering framework clearly explains vector embeddings, query fan-out and passage-level retrieval. For technical depth, see the AI Search Manual series and Rank Report newsletter at ipullrank.com.
3. Resources to read critically
Many “2026 GEO/AI citation research reports” come from GEO tool vendors or marketing agencies, including data-led articles claiming that LinkedIn's citation rate has doubled or Reddit is the most-cited domain. Their conclusions may be accurate, but the samples and methods are not transparent, and the material primarily serves marketing and lead generation. Broad insights can be useful: answer-first structure, entity authority and low citation overlap between platforms do align with academic findings. Specific numbers should be cross-checked before being cited as rigorous evidence.
4. Chinese-language resources
- Searching Zhihu for “GEO 生成式引擎优化” reveals several substantial articles that trace the development from SEO to GEO and explain practical approaches. Another suggested search term is “GEO 生成引擎优化白皮书”.
- Some cross-border and independent e-commerce agencies, such as Iwish, publish practical GEO guides using Ahrefs and other data to explain the distribution of sources cited in AI Overviews. These can be useful for brands expanding internationally.
- WULIFE GEO Lab has a dedicated research section featuring leading papers and original in-depth GEO studies. It offers objective analysis of industry trends and focused professional content.
------
Practical recommendation: for academic research or technical validation, start with the arXiv papers, especially the foundational GEO paper and E-GEO. For marketing and content-strategy implementation, prioritize data-backed industry research from sources such as iPullRank and Ahrefs, while remaining skeptical of purely promotional blogs.
